Fox’s Emily Deschanel Dishes on Being Vegan, Going Green

So there was another article with Emily, on Health.com, that must have been done on the same day as the one I posted here. She's also on the cover of the April '09 issue of Health Magazine.

---------
Bones star Emily Deschanel spoke with Health magazine about her passion for planet Earth. In this web-exclusive interview she talks about her eco-friendly lifestyle—and how you can go green, too.

Q: What’s one simple change Health readers could do to go green?
A: Be aware of what you’re doing in every way. Turning on your light impacts so many things—it affects the environment and uses fossil fuels. Instead of thinking, I need to change this immediately, start thinking about how you are and what you’re doing in your life that you can do better.

Q: Do you ever get disappointed with yourself by forgoing going green?
A: Yes, especially with take-out food. I keep telling myself that I should bring containers to the place and have them fill it up. It’s inconvenient, because if I want them to deliver to my house, I have to look at the pile of containers, and I get disappointed in myself. There’s got to be a better way.

Q: In L.A. there are a lot of resources for vegans, like you. Any advice for going vegan in a small town?
A: You can do it anywhere, but you may want to just start by being vegetarian, or eating less meat or less dairy. And that’s good for your health. There are so many studies that show eating meat and dairy products leads to a lot of cancers and heart disease.

Q: Do you have to be a greenie to win your heart?
A: My boyfriend eats mainly vegetarian, but he’s not totally vegetarian. He ate everything when we first started going out. I did not try to change him, but, I think after he went to enough animal events, and was around a lot of loud vegans, [laughs] he picked up some habits.

Q: What causes are you most passionate about?
A: Animals are what I’m most passionate about. I think that so many people don’t care about animals, or they put people first. And I value them both equally. I’m working with the Humane Society and with Farm Sanctuary, which is a farm animal sanctuary, but there’s a lot of animal organizations that I believe are doing really good works.

Q: How do you juggle it all? Is there a secret to balancing everything?
A: I think it’s important to take time for yourself, even if it’s five minutes. If you can get 20, that’s amazing. Every day, find time for yourself, to really let go and relax. I love taking a bath and lighting candles. I just do breathing exercises, even for a few minutes. And that really kind of centers me.

Q: When and where do you feel happiest?
A: I feel happiest when I’m surrounded by friends or family. Around the holidays I had friends over, and we were in my dining room eating food and drinking wine and sharing stories. I also love driving up the coast and looking at a beautiful sunset, even though that sounds so cheesy.

I absolutely love Emily to death. =)
After reading one of her previous interviews she actually inspired me to go vegetarian. I haven't had a bite of meat in five months.

Me too! I've been doing some volunteer work for them and everyone I've come in contact with is extremely nice and really cares about what they're doing for the animals. It's great to see so many people come together over something so important :)

Oh that's awesome! Are you at the NY or CA farm? I hope to be able to visit one of the farms soon. I'd actually love to stay in the country cabin that the CA farm has. :D

The volunteer work I've been doing isn't actually at the farm but at their events in NYC. For instance, I'll be at the Farm Sanctuary table at the Earth Day event at Central Station in mid-April.

I do hope to get up to the NY Farm Sanctuary one weekend this summer though:)

The url text makes it sound like "vegan" is a drug, lol.

I like living in my little apartment because I've got all of three light switches to worry about turning off. One of my roommates is really bad about leaving the kitchen light on at night when no one is in there, so I crawl out of bed in the middle of the night and stumble out to the kitchen to turn it off, lol.

Is anyone else going to going to participate in the Earth Hour this Saturday? I have a note up so I won't forget, I'm pretty psyched about it :)

Oh, yeah I've heard of it. No more, actually. I just heard it on the radio, have no idea what it really is.

They expect the power to drop out because so many people can participate. Think I'm gonna Google it.

Hm..at nights I hardly ever have the lights on, so I think I could do it.

A huge part of my city is doing it actually, a lot of the prominent buildings such as the University, the Cathedral, the huge TV-tower and so on is gonna be completely dark for one hour. :) I'm gonna be at a pre-party during the time it's supposed to be on, but I'm gonna ask the people I'm with if we can turn off the lights and get drunk by candlelight instead. ;)

As for electricity, I always turn off the lights in rooms I'm not in, I recycle, and do all that stuff. As I don't have the strength to become a vegan or vegetarian, taking care of our environment is a very important thing to me. :)

i like the interview. Except that the part about Diary and meat products lead to cancer and heart disease. It doesn't if you know what you are doing. I mean red meats and fatty milk does. But an increase in soy leads to breast cancer. So it goes both ways. Otherwise good interview.

It makes me think that if you eat those you'll get cancer, and thats not true. Reminds me of that scene in "Mean Girls" when the coach is like, 'If you have sex, you will get pregnant, and die!" lol!

Well, technically, most things in moderation are okay but the animal proteins in dairy and meats have been known to increase the risk of cancer and heart disease. Those diseases feed on animal proteins moreso than plant proteins so the more you stay away from them, the lesser your risks will be.

Also, a new article was just put out saying that an increase of soy in a child's diet may actually reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Studies change all the time and no matter what you eat, there is always a chance to develop health issues, but by staying away from the things that are more closely linked to those things helps a lot.

It's really just a matter of personal choice. Since each person's body handles things differently only you can know what's best for you. :)

The little boy I babysat, drank vanilla soy milk all the time, t he one time he threw it up, I haven't been able to look at soy milk since. I have a very active life, I dance a lot, and so i have to go to a doctor, mostly because i get really bad ankle pain and i have something wrong with my wrist, but we also talk about health and nutrition and he was actually recommending that i increase my intake of lean chicken and fish, something about the protein in the meat helps my muscles when I'm working out. I mean if you don't have as active a life, like Emily, you don't have to really think about what foods you need to help you later. I know a lot of gymnasts also eat a lot of lean meat and fish for the same reason as me. But like i said we work out more than others normally do, so it helps for us.

The point was that the comment made me think of that line from the movie. Which prompted me to watch the movie. Now i want to watch stick it....... This is what happens on my days off. LOL!
